MPPT: Ultra Fast Maximum Power Point Tracking

By constantly monitoring the voltage and current output of your solar (PV) panels, MPPT technology ensures that every drop of available power is rinsed out of your panels, and harvested for storage. The advantage of this is most noticeable when the sky is partially clouded, and light intensity is constantly changing.

MPPT controllers operate solar panels at their Maximum Power Point improving efficiency up to 30% by adjusting input voltage to harvest the maximum power from the solar panels. It then manages this power to supply the varying voltage requirement of the battery plus load. The MPPT senses when to adjust the output that it is being sent to the battery and will shut down for a few microseconds, calculate and make relevant adjustments. The principle of MPPT is to extract the maximum possible power from a solar panel by setting the most efficient combination of voltage and current - maximum power point.

REMOTE MONITORING AND CONTROL

Built-in Bluetooth along with the VictronConnect App provides easy access to the extensive range of functions available on your solar charge controller such as:

  • Solar Gauge – Realtime power output
  • Battery Voltage
  • Battery Current
  • Battery State
  • History Analysis
  • Various Settings

Remotely control and monitor the extensive features of your SmartSolar MPPT charger with built-in bluetooth by pairing it with your smartphone or other device via VictronConnect.

  •  If your installation is connected to the internet with a GX device, the Victron Remote Management Portal (VRM) provides access to the full power of your MPPT, anytime, anywhere; both VictronConnect and VRM are free to use. For remote installations - even when there is no internet connection nearby - you may be able to monitor your MPPT by connecting the GlobalLink 520.

Ultra-fast Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)

Especially in case of a clouded sky, when light intensity is changing continuously, an ultra-fast MPPT controller will improve energy harvest by up to 30 % compared to PWM charge controllers and by up to 10 % compared to slower MPPT controllers.

 Battery Life: Intelligent Battery Management

When a solar charge controller is not able to recharge the battery to its full capacity within one day, the result is often that the battery will continually be cycled between a ‘partially charged’ state and the ‘end of discharge’ state. This mode of operation (no regular full recharge) will destroy a lead-acid battery within weeks or months. The Battery Life algorithm will monitor the state of charge of the battery and, if needed, day by day slightly increase the load disconnect level (i.e. disconnect the load earlier) until the harvested solar energy is sufficient to recharge the battery to nearly the full 100 %. From that point onwards, the load disconnect level will be modulated so that a nearly 100 % recharge is achieved about once every week.

MPPT 100/30 & 100/50 Victron SmartSolar 100 VOC, 50 Amp MPPT solar panel charge controller for 12V and 24V battery systems (including Lithium) with Bluetooth. The Victron MPPT SmartSolar support Advanced Maximum Power Point Detection. Unlike the conventional MPPTs which tend to lock to a local MPP when shady conditions occur, [which may not be the optimum MPP], Advance Maximum Power Point Detection will harvest maximin energy by locking to the optimum MPP.

  • IP43 rated charger casing and resin encapsulated electronics offers all vital components exceptional protection from the environment
  • Programmable battery charge algorithm allows you to tailor the chargers output to your specific requirements
  • Internal temperature sensor compensates absorption and float charge voltage for temperature to ensure optimal efficiency
  • Fully discharged battery recovery function will initiate charging even if the battery has been discharged to zero volts
  • Optional external battery voltage and temperature sensing via Bluetooth using a Smart Battery Sense or a BMV-712 Smart Battery Monitor
  • Long 5 year manufacturer warranty for added confidence

Internal temperature sensor provides additional electronic protection

  • Over-temperature protection and power derating when temperature is high.
  • PV short circuit and PV reverse polarity protection.
  • PV reverse current protection.

Other features:

  • With no cooling fan the maximum efficiency exceeds 98%.
  • Flexible charge algorithm provides functionality for fully programmable charge algorithm, and eight preprogrammed algorithms, selectable with a rotary switch

** You take the total watts of the solar array divided by the voltage of the battery bank. That will give you the output current of the charge controller. For example, a 1000W solar array ÷ 24V battery bank = 41.6A. The rating of the charge controller should be at least 40A

HOW DO SOLAR 100/50 MPPT WORK ?

A solar charger gathers energy from your solar panels, and stores it in your batteries. Using the latest, fastest technology, SmartSolar maximises this energy-harvest, driving it intelligently to achieve full charge in the shortest possible time. SmartSolar maintains battery health, extending its life. The SmartSolar charge controller will even recharge a severely depleted battery. It can operate with a battery voltage as low as 0 Volts, provided the cells are not permanently sulphated or otherwise damaged. Using a solar battery charger can be a great way to harness clean energy from the sun and keep your devices powered up, especially during outdoor activities or emergencies. However, it’s essential to follow safety guidelines to ensure proper operation and prevent accidents.

Here are some safety tips for using a solar battery charge:

  1. Read the manual: Always read and understand the manufacturer’s instructions and guidelines provided in the user manual. Different solar chargers may have specific requirements and precautions.
  2. Choose a reputable brand: Purchase your solar battery charger from a reputable and trustworthy manufacturer to ensure it meets safety standards and is of good quality.
  3. Check for damage: Before use, inspect the charger and its cables for any signs of damage, such as frayed wires or broken components. Do not use a damaged charger, as it may pose safety hazards.
  4. Place in a safe location: Set up the solar charger in a safe and stable location. Avoid placing it near flammable materials or in areas prone to moisture or extreme temperatures.
  5. Use in appropriate conditions: Solar chargers work best in direct sunlight, so use them outdoors in sunny conditions whenever possible. Avoid using them in rainy or excessively cloudy weather.
  6. Keep away from water; Solar panels and electronic components are susceptible to damage from water. Ensure the charger remains dry during operation, and do not immerse it in water or expose it to rain.
  7. Use compatible devices: Use the solar charger only with devices that are compatible with its voltage and current ratings. Using incompatible devices may damage the charger or the device being charged.
  8. Avoid overcharging: Some solar chargers come with built-in protection against overcharging, but it’s still essential to monitor the charging process. If your charger does not have overcharge protection, avoid leaving devices connected for extended periods once they are fully charged.
  9. Do not disassemble: Never attempt to disassemble the solar charger, as it may expose you to dangerous electrical components and void the warranty.
  10. Store properly: when not in use, store the solar charger in a safe and dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  11. Disconnect when not in use: Unplug and disconnect the charger from the device and the solar panel when not in use. This prevents unintended electrical connections and reduces the risk of damage.
  12. Educate children: If you have solar chargers accessible to children, educate them about the potential risks and how to use them safely.

By following these safety tips, you can enjoy the benefits of a solar battery charger while minimizing potential hazards and ensuring its longevity.
