In simplistic terms, DC-DC Chargers are a smart charger that runs off 12-volts. They do this by taking the power output of your vehicle’s alternator and creating an output voltage and current that’s ideally suited to charging and/or maintaining your auxiliary battery. Alternators are not good at this, as they’re not dedicated chargers perse. Their primary role is to power the vehicle’s electrical system – recharging the main battery after start-up is its secondary role. Alternators don’t perform well when trying to simultaneously charge a nearly full battery (main) and a depleted battery (auxiliary). By solving these charging issues, a DC-DC charger will increase the life and efficiency of your auxiliary battery.

A DC-DC charger (also known as a battery to battery charger) converts the output from your primary battery and charges your secondary battery using optimal charging. It is a smart charger that runs off 12-volts. It takes power from your vehicle’s alternator while you are driving and creates an output voltage and current that will charge and maintain your ever-important second battery.
DCDC chargers are primarily used to charge a battery bank made up of one, or more batteries that are designed to be deeply discharged.Whether you need a DC-DC charger depends on your battery system and how you use it. If you have a dual battery system in your vehicle and you want to charge your auxiliary battery while driving, then you will need a DC-DC charger. The reason you need a DC-DC charger is that most of the time your vehicle battery is a lead-acid battery, so your alternator is designed to charge a lead-acid battery. DC means Direct Current and is the flow of electrons in one direction. With DC, the direction and flow of the amperage (current) do not change unlike AC or Alternating Current, which is usually generated by power plants and used mostly in household scenarios. A DC charger will take the available power (DC) from your vehicle’s alternator and convert this to energy suitable for charging your house battery properly. The DC charger determines if the alternator’s voltage is suitable; if not, it boosts it to a higher voltage suitable to charge AGM house batteries through the 3 stages of charging – Bulk, Absorption and Float. The other reason that you will need a DC-DC charger is that by simply connecting to the car battery the house battery back in your caravan will only receive the terminal voltage of what the alternator puts out to the car battery and this will not match the voltage requirements of your deep cycle house battery. This will be a different type of battery – deep cycle, and therefore will need to be charged differently.
